Oregon has it all: Snowcapped mountains, plunging waterfalls, churning rivers, vast forests, jewel-like lakes, lush meadows, sandy dunes, and rocky beaches. All year round the outdoors beckons, whether in Eugene or elsewhere. Little more than an hour west of Eugene is the famous Oregon coast. Virtually the entire oceanfront is accessible to the public. An hour to the east and you're in the Cascades, perfect for snow-boarding, snow-shoeing, and skiing, both downhill and cross-country. Beyond is high-desert country, which lures hikers, campers, rock climbers, and cave explorers. And there are plenty of other activities, such as mountain biking, white water rafting, kayaking, windsurfing, or golfing at one of Oregon's 87 public golf courses.
Between 1990 and 2000 Oregon's population grew 20 percent-eleven fastest of the 50 states. While that growth rate has since leveled off, a lot of people have discovered that this is a good place to live and work. But it's more than a place; it's a state of mind.
PortlandAn easy two-hour drive north on the freeway, Portland calls itself the city of books, beer, bikes, and blooms, and is frequently rated one of America's most livable cities. The Portland metropolitan area has become the midpoint in the vast information technology corridor stretching from Seattle to San Francisco.
Portland has given Silicon Valley a run for its money in attracting major operations by such high-tech giants as Intel, Hewlett-Packard (Vancouver, WA and Corvallis, OR), and Xerox. With Nike, Columbia Sportswear, and Adidas all headquartered there as well, Greater Portland also has become a center for sports-related products and outdoor apparel.
The health care industry is another Pacific Northwest staple. Oregon Health Sciences University has become a major center for medical research, and Kaiser Permanente, Legacy Health Systems, and the Sisters of Providence are among Oregon's top employers.
