Portland
Europe in America
An easy two-hour drive north on the freeway, Portland calls itself the city of books, beer, bikes, and blooms, and is frequently rated one of America's most livable cities. The Portland metropolitan area has become the midpoint in the vast information technology corridor stretching from Seattle to San Francisco.
The Silicon Forest
Portland has given Silicon Valley a run for its money in attracting major
operations by such high-tech giants as Intel, Hewlett-Packard (Vancouver,
WA and Corvallis, OR), and Xerox. With Nike, Columbia Sportswear, and Adidas
all headquartered there as well, Greater Portland also has become a center for
sports-related products and outdoor apparel.
The health care industry is another
Pacific Northwest staple. Oregon Health Sciences University has become
a major center for medical research, and Kaiser Permanente, Legacy Health
Systems, and the Sisters of Providence are among Oregon's top employers.
